Course Summary

Maryam will share her experience of seven years as an online teacher for a specialty coach training institute, and as training director and course writer through the 1990's for several corporations in different training contexts. We will be discussing the best open source software, audio class -vs- webcasts and how to handle each inexpensively, enhancing student experience through didactic and autodidactic participation, in-class structure, out-of-class semi-structured learning and participation opportunities, skilful initiation and use of the cohort bond, collaborative software as community, ensuring ongoing learning after the course is over.

ATutor

ATutor is the first fully inclusive LCMS, complying with the W3C WCAG 1.0 accessibility specifications at the AA+ level, allowing access to all potential learners, instructors, and administrators, including those with disabilities who may be accessing the system using assistive technologies. Conformance with W3C XHTML 1.0 specifications ensures that ATutor is presented consistently in any standards compliant technology.

 

ATutor has also adopted the IMS/SCORM Content Packaging specifications, allowing content developers to create reusable content that can be swapped between different e-learning systems. Content created in other IMS or SCORM comformant systems can be imported into ATutor, and visa versa. ATutor also includes a SCORM 1.2 Runtime Environment (LMS RTE3) for playing and managing SCORM based Sharable Content Objects (SCOs).

 

Claroline

Claroline is a free application based on PHP/MySQL allowing teachers or education organizations to create and administrate courses through the web. Developed from teachers to teachers, Claroline is built over sound pedagogical principles allowing a large variety of pedagogical setup including widening of traditional classroom and online collaborative learning. Claroline is translated in 34 languages and used by hundreds of institutions around the world. The software is released under Open Source licence (GPL). Downloading and using Claroline is completely free of charge.

Sakai

Sakai is an online Collaboration and Learning Environment. Many users of Sakai deploy it to support teaching and learning, ad hoc group collaboration, support for portfolios and research collaboration.

 

Sakai is a free and open source product that is built and maintained by the Sakai community. Sakai's development model is called "Community Source" because many of the developers creating Sakai are drawn from the "community" of organizations that have adopted and are using Sakai.
